KALISPELL, Mont. — Kristopher Schreiner, a Montana history teacher at Kalispell Middle School, has been named the 2026 Centennial Bell Montana History Teacher of the Year by the Montana Historical Society.

He was unanimously selected by the award committee, which praised the scope of his curriculum, the range of hands-on learning opportunities he provides, and his commitment to fostering "a lasting connection between his students and the place they call home."

Schreiner has taught Montana history at Kalispell Middle School for 18 years. He grew up on a farm near Laurel, where both sides of his family homesteaded in the early 1900s, and he has spent his entire career bringing that firsthand connection to the land into the classroom.

Schreiner's classroom is known for immersive, hands-on activities that bring Montana history to life. Over the years, his students have taken part in atlatl training, fire-making, hide tanning, gold panning, log cabin construction, butter churning, and many other experiences.

"Teaching Montana history is not simply a subject I cover — it is a lifelong passion rooted in both my professional career and my personal heritage. My goal is to foster a lasting connection between my students and the history of the place they call home." — Kristopher Schreiner, Kalispell Middle School

"He does not simply teach Montana history — he immerses students in it," said Dallas Stuker, principal of Kalispell Middle School. "Whether students are mining for gold, milling lumber, or contributing to the construction of a log cabin, they are engaging in memorable learning experiences that deepen their understanding of Montana's heritage."

Students have noticed the difference. "I have seen students that I know particularly hate school come into his class with that special glimmer in their eye, ready to see what they will get to experience," said Serena Carlson, an eighth-grade student. "Those lessons stick with us instead of learning it, taking a test on it, and forgetting what we wrote down."

Schreiner will receive $4,250 from event sponsors the Montana Television Network, the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers, and the Virginia City Preservation Alliance. The money may be used for classroom materials, guest speakers, field trips, and anything else that enhances student learning. Additional project supporters include the Montana Historical Society and the 1889 Coffeehouse in Helena.

About the Centennial Bell Award

The History Teacher of the Year Award is part of the 37th Montana Statehood Centennial Bell celebration. Because Statehood Day, Nov. 8, falls on a Sunday this year, Schreiner and his students will ring the Centennial Bell on Nov. 9 at 10:29 a.m., the exact minute Montana became the 41st state in 1889. The award was established in 1989 by Montana Historical Society trustee Norma Ashby-Smith to honor the centennial of Montana statehood.

KALISPELL, Mont. — Jacob Braach, a junior at Flathead High School, has been named the 2025-2026 Montana State Trig-Star and will represent Montana at the National Trig-Star Competition this June.

Jacob earned the top score in the state after a perfect 100 percent finish at the local chapter competition held at Flathead High School on Thursday, April 23. He completed the 60-minute exam in 31 minutes and 49 seconds, with the fastest time serving as the tiebreaker for the highest score. His score was then submitted to the state competition, where it ranked first in Montana.

Jacob completed the 120-minute National Trig-Star exam on Tuesday, May 13. National results are expected in mid-June. He began competing in math contests during middle school under teacher Peter Musick, where he participated in MathCounts and Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) competitions. Jacob later joined the Flathead High School Math Club under advisor Jenna Nichols and has competed in both the MCTM and Trig-Star competitions.

"For the past two years, I placed second in the local chapter Trig-Star competition, so winning state this year feels really rewarding. I enjoy math competitions because they're fun and challenging. After high school, I plan to attend college to pursue a music degree. I play the French horn."

About the Trig-Star Competition

Sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), the Trig-Star Competition challenges students to apply trigonometry and problem-solving skills to practical, real-world situations. The contest highlights the role of mathematics in careers such as surveying, engineering, and mapping while recognizing students who excel in advanced math.

The local chapter competition is a 60-minute exam in which the highest score wins and the fastest completion time serves as the tiebreaker. The national exam is 120 minutes.

"I've really enjoyed working with Jacob over the past three years in Math Club. His enthusiasm for mathematics is contagious, and he genuinely enjoys helping others solve challenging problems. Jacob has dedicated countless hours preparing for the Trig-Star competition, and it's exciting to see his hard work pay off. I'm proud to see him represent Montana at the national competition."
